What is Akshaya Triyati and what does it mean?
It is a Hindu festival that falls on the Lunar day of Shukla Paksha of the Indian month of Vaisakha. The festival is considered to be one of the most auspicious days for Hindus. Akshaya Tritiya is a Sanskrit word, where 'Akshaya' stands for 'eternal, the never diminishing sense of happiness, success, and joy' and 'Tritiya' stands for 'third'. This year 2021, Akshaya Tritiya falls on 14 May, Friday.
How is Akshaya Triyati commonly celebrated?
Akshaya Tritiya is considered one of the most auspicious festivals since it is the day of manifold blessings. Any initiative made on that day or anything bought on that day is considered to be good fortune. People typically start a new business or begin a new venture on Akshaya Tritiya.
This is also one of the most popular days to plan weddings or journeys as the spirit of this day bids them on a very long and fulfilling life journey. It was also believed that people born in that month will be very lucky and will shine bright throughout their life. Last but not least, the most popular activity is the buying of gold.
Why do so many people buy gold on this day?
As gold is symbolic of good fortune and wealth, buying this is considered pious on this day. When it comes to buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya, there are many reasons. The most common reason is that it is the most auspicious time to purchase wealth, especially gold, and one who buys wealth on this day sees the increase in opulence.
It is also believed that on this day Kubera attained the post of treasurer. Therefore, buying and worshiping gold pleases him.
Another reason to buy gold during this festival is because of the month of Shravana (July-August). The period between these months is favorable for engagements and marriages. Families in the Hindu society buy gold and ornaments on Akshaya Tritiya two months before Shravana. It makes the most logical sense to buy gold and ornaments in advance. Even a marriage ceremony performed on Akshaya Tritiya is considered very auspicious and brings stability and harmony.

The Tritiya Tithi begins at 5:38 AM on May 14 and ends at 7:59 AM on May 15. Although Akshaya Tritiya day is auspicious from start to finish, the best time to perform puja would be between 5:38 AM to 12:18 PM.
